Genova, a city steeped in maritime history and vibrant culture, boasts a unique charm that lingers in its ancient streets. Among its treasures are the botteghe storiche, historical workshops that have stood the test of time, whispering tales of centuries past. These shops are not just businesses; they are living testaments to the city’s rich heritage and the artisan spirit that has always defined it.

Wandering through the labyrinthine alleys of the old town, one stumbles upon these botteghe tucked away like hidden gems. Their weathered facades, often adorned with intricate carvings and faded paint, speak of a bygone era. Stepping inside is like stepping back in time, transported into a world where tradition reigns supreme.

The air is often thick with the aroma of freshly baked bread, the scent of aged leather, or the enticing fragrance of exotic spices. The shelves are crammed with handcrafted goods, each piece a testament to meticulous skill and generations of knowledge passed down. Whether it’s the delicate filigree of a master jeweler, the intricate patterns woven into a tapestry, or the rhythmic tap-tap-tap of a cobbler repairing a worn shoe, the botteghe are alive with the sounds and sights of meticulous craftsmanship.

These workshops are not merely places of commerce; they are cultural hubs where stories are exchanged, traditions are preserved, and the spirit of the city thrives. The bottegaio, the owner of the shop, is often a local legend, a repository of knowledge about the city’s history and the secrets of their craft. Engaging in conversation with them is like unearthing a hidden chapter of Genova’s past, learning about the evolution of techniques, the changing tastes of the city, and the unique character that each bottega embodies.

Some of these botteghe have been operating for centuries, their legacies intertwined with the very fabric of Genova. Romanengo and their fantastic candies, Caffarena hardware store, Drogheria di Canneto are my must-visit every time I’m in town, as friends are handling those historical shops. Many others, like Pasticceria Svizzera, established in 1847, continues to tantalize taste buds with its age-old recipes and decadent pastries. Antica Oreficeria Repetto, founded in 1850, dazzles with its exquisite jewelry creations, each piece a masterpiece of craftsmanship.

These historical workshops are not just businesses; they are living museums, preserving the essence of a bygone era and ensuring that the city’s rich heritage continues to be celebrated. They are a real document of life ad heritage.

However, the future of these botteghe is not without its challenges. The fast-paced modern world presents a constant threat to their traditional way of life. The influx of mass-produced goods and the changing consumer landscape can make it difficult for these small, independent shops to compete.

Yet, the spirit of resilience is deeply ingrained in the Genoese identity. Initiatives to support and promote the botteghe storiche are gaining momentum. The “Botteghe Storiche di Genova” association works tirelessly to safeguard these cultural treasures, ensuring their stories continue to be told for generations to come. Tourists flock to these shops, drawn by the authenticity and the opportunity to experience a piece of Genova’s living history.

Genova’s botteghe storiche are more than just shops; they are portals to the city’s soul.

They are living testaments to the enduring spirit of craftsmanship, the power of tradition, and the unwavering dedication to preserving a unique cultural heritage. As we navigate the ever-changing world, these historical workshops serve as a vital reminder of the importance of preserving the past and ensuring that the stories and skills they embody continue to inspire and enrich future generations.

It has been more than fifty years since I began traveling across the world — and the seven seas — for work or for pleasure, always with a Leica M camera close at hand. The camera has never been an accessory; it has been a constant companion, a way of observing, remembering, and making sense of the places and people I encountered along the way. I started keeping this kind of journal some time ago, not as a diary in the traditional sense, but as a space where images and words could meet. This is not a publication driven by schedules or algorithms. At times I disappear for long stretches; then, inevitably, I return with semi-regular updates. Publishing, for me, is a mirror of my state of mind and emotions. It follows my rhythm, not the other way around. You have to take it exactly as it comes. Every photograph you see here is mine. They are fragments of a life spent moving, looking, and waiting for moments to reveal themselves — often quietly, sometimes unexpectedly. This blog is not about destinations, but about presence. About what remains when the journey slows down and the shutter finally clicks.
