Stavo camminando l’altro giorno sul Pyrmont Bridge, a Darling Harbour: avevo la strana sensazione mi mancasse qualcosa. Ho controllato il portafoglio, la macchina fotografica, mi son guardato detto le tasche: nulla, non mancava assolutamente nulla. Ho alzato lo sguardo e la sensazione si è acuita, ma non capivo da cosa fosse causata.

Cazzo, m’hanno fregato la monorotaia !” Si, la monorotaia con la navetta che mi sferragliava normalmente sulla testa non c’è più: rimossa completamente, compresi i piloni che sostenevano la struttura.

Aperta nel 1988, era un sistema di trasporto circolare della lunghezza di circa 4 kilomentri, con 4 treni che la percorrevano in contemporanea. Ideata inizialmente ai primi degli anni ’80 con il recupero integrale di Darling Harbour e pensata per collegare le maggiori attrazioni della zona, fu un mezzo fiasco sin dall’inizio. Il piano ambizioso che puntava ad aggiungere in una seconda fase le stazioni di Marker St. e Harbour St. non fu mai realizzato e, malgrado una concessione fino al 2038 della TNT che ne gestiva le operazioni, questa se ne liberò nel 1998.

Visto che quando ero qui l’anno scorso, a Marzo, son certo di essermela vista passare sulla testa, sono andato a fare qualche ricerca e ho letto che nel Giugno dell’anno scorso è stata definitivamente chiusa e le operazioni di smantellamento sono ancora in corso (dalla parte opposta della baia). Alcuni vagoni e una stazione sono stati trasferiti nel museo dei trasporti
